On August 18, 2014, the Guidelines for Promoting the ConvergentDevelopment of Traditional Media and New Media was approved by the fourthplenary session of the Central leading group for Comprehensive Deepening Reformin China. The Guidelines, as a topdesign, is widely considered critical to initiate a new wave of deepeningconvergence and comprehensive transformation of Chinese media and ICTsindustries. The Guidelines alsopointed out the specific goals, approaches and tasks for the convergence, whichis quite clear and operational in terms of further processes of implementation.Actually, it is believed that the promotion of the convergence betweentraditional media and new media aims to build a series of new mainstream mediaconglomerates with multiple platforms and products, advanced technologicalstrengths and competitiveness, domestically and internationally. Theseprospective media conglomerates are required to own capacities of economy, communication, public trust and influence. Furthermore, they are regarded asthe basis to form a diverse and convergent modern communication system.Needless to say, this is not only a national communication system based inChina, but also matters for the formation of a new global information andcommunication order, in which China and Chinese media are supposed to play animportant role.

Along with both the technicaldevelopment of Internet and mobile communications and the deepening of mediaconvergence as well as new media and human behavior, the interplay of politics, economy and culture have been the center of discussion for academia andindustries. Meanwhile, the world information and communication structure is inthe middle of transition against the background of world power structure intransformation. Therefore, whether a new world information and communicationorder is possible is attracting global attention, particularly with a focus onthe dynamic roles of China and other emerging economies from the Global South.

The education and research ofjournalism and communication have been influenced as well. A new academic mapis expected to draw against the background of new structure and new order.Taking foreign language universities in China as entry point, the 2015 ChinaCommunication Forum also includes special sessions on this topic and bringstogether scholars in a broad field of foreign language teaching, journalism, communication and international studies across the country.

Therefore, the 2015 China Communication Forum isdesigned to focus on both the formation of modern communication system and thediscipline building and teaching reform for foreign language universities inChina.
